LBJ Ranch Part 2

Yesterday, we returned to the LBJ ranch.  When we visited before we were rushed and did not see everything.  We started with the Sauer Beckman Living History Farm.

This farm is adjacent to the LBJ Ranch.  It was donated to Texas Parks and Wildlife in 1966.  Park attendants wear period costumes and do all the chores of farm life to give demonstrations of a typical farm in 1918.  This stone house is typical of the early German homesteads in the hill country.

If they are German, they must be making sausage.  I thought it smelled wonderful - not sure Catherine agreed.
On to the LBJ ranch.  We stopped at the show barn to look at some of the stock.  This guy was not interested in company.
Out back, there were some goats demonstrating that the grass is always greener on the other side.
We arrived at the hanger building which now serves as the home visitors center.  As we were waiting for our home tour, we looked at some of the vehicles.  Below is LBJ's "Hunting Car" that he had outfitted with a gun rack and a bar - perfect.
He also had a German amphibious vehicle. There were pictures of him driving on the lake - fun.
We moved on to the Texas white house.  You get a real feel for people when you go into their home.
No pictures were allowed inside.  The house was comfortable, nice but not ornate.  The ranger gave a very good tour, which gave some insight into life in the Texas white house.  We enjoyed the visit and learned a few more things about LBJ and Lady Bird.
Today we are planning to visit the WWII museum, although Catherine is a bit under the weather - not sure if it is allergies or a cold.  See you down the road....

  1. HA! Your title faked me out. I thought I'd missed part one somehow thinking it was right before Part II. I think you may learn a lot about people from their cars too. :-)

  2. Loved the car pictures, seems LBJ had quiet a range of tastes from the types of vehicles he owned.

Wonder if the Secret Service agents let him drive the amphibious car after he became president. He was a big man and that car is really pretty small. If they did, they must have really sweated watching him motor around in the water.

  3. He outfitted his car with a gun rack and a bar? I know this is Texas, but that's kinda scary :)

  4. Gun rack and a bar...for a moment there, I thought you were in NC instead of Texas! Birthplace of moonshine and NASCAR.

  5. Hmmm, a gun rack and a bar. Obviously a different era. :-)

    Hope Catherine feels better soon.
