Catherine did not feel up to a long day at the WWII museum. We opted for lunch at the Fredericksburg Herb Farm instead. Catherine had dined here with her parents and really loved it.
It is a restaurant, and B&B. The restaurant is located in this refurbished farm house. They also have a new spa (may have to try that next week) . Lunch was fabulous.
I had french onion soup and salad and Catherine had a portobello mushroom sandwich. The french onion soup was one of the best I have ever had - very flavorful. We could not resist the home made desserts- Chocolate mousse for Catherine ( one of the best she has ever had) and milk and honey ice cream for me- delicious.
After lunch, we strolled around the herb garden. It is a really lovely setting. They have a shop with home made soaps and candles. The also have quite a collection of garden and home decor.
There was even a shout out to those of us who do not have the greenest thumb :)
On the way home we stopped at Fort Martin Scott Historic Site
Fort Martin Scott was part of a line of frontier forts established to protect travelers and settlers in Texas. The building of the fort also provided an economic stimulus to the fledgling community of Fredericksburg. The fort has been partially restored but the visitors center was not open. They do have a self-guided tour. The guardhouse with it's 18 inch stone walls (central Texas air conditioning) is the only original building that remains.
They have rebuilt some other buildings such as the officer's quarters below...
The last commander of Fort Martin Scott was Captain James Longstreet, who later served as a corps commander for General Lee's Army of Northern Virgina. It was another beautiful spring day here in the hill country.
A great lunch, A beautiful walk, learning a little more about the history of the area....Just does not get any better :)
See you down the road.....

Missed both of those places when I was in the hill country. Guess I'll have to go back some time. :)
ReplyDeleteSounds like a wonderful day. Yum, yum, onion soup and portobello sandwhich. I think I need to get this on my lunch menu.
ReplyDeleteI had a large herb garden in the yard at our farm. Unlike the vegetable garden it took very little work and I really do miss it. So wonderful cutting them, drying them, watching them flower and the smells...........heaven. Maybe I need to get one of those little herb planters to travel along with me. You are making me homesick for my herbs,.
hahahaha sandwhich....hmmmm which witch...wich.
ReplyDeleteGood thing you don't find that kind of air conditioning in motorhomes, there wouldn't be any CCC left to carry herbs...
ReplyDeleteI'm one of the people that "grow dammit" sign was made for!
ReplyDeleteThe lunch sounds like it was quite yummy! Very cool pictures! I love cooking with herbs.
