Wednesday, we got a thistle sock for the finches. We got the pre-filled sock and that will probably last through our visit here. It did not take long to get some customers.
Thursday, we headed out early for a hike at Aguirre Springs. Apparently, it is now a national monument. It has been pretty cold up until recently. I was surprised that the Ocitillo were just starting to bloom.
It has been quite a while since we have done this hike. Last fall, it was so buggy we gave up after about 2 miles. It was harder than I remembered.
Living in Florida again, has made us flat landers. But, we made it up the mountain. Catherine chose the route this time. She picked the right direction on the loop. We did the easier side last. It was a good hike- 6 miles. We were glad to get to do it again. The weather was perfect- a slight breeze kept us cool most of the way.
When we got home, I refilled the hummingbird feeder. As I was hanging it back up, I noticed an ugly little sparrow sitting right above it. It did not move the whole time I was messing with the feeder.
We went to lunch and when we returned guess who was sitting under our grill.
We figured out that it was not a sparrow but a robin fledgeling from the nest above the hummingbird feeder.
We left it alone for several hours but it never moved. I worried that it was not quite ready to leave the nest. So, I got my ladder and a towel to put it back in. When I picked it up, it squawked. Then I found out that mama and daddy were sitting in the tree above the grill. Boy- did they give me what for. I put it back in the nest anyway.
Later, I saw it back out of the nest in the tree. When Catherine walked Grace about 7:30, she saw it on the ground again in the next campsite with mama. She was probably moving it along so that crazy lady wouldn't grab it again. I should have just left it alone but apparently - no harm -no fowl. :)
Hope no animal gets that baby robin before it learns to fly. I know it's the way of nature, but I don't like to see things like that happen.
ReplyDeletePretty hike and understand that flatlander thing;o)) Six miles and lots of uphill will change that!!
ReplyDeleteNature does have it's ways, but sometimes she can use a little help:o)
Apparently mom and dad thought it was "time" :) Hope they'll stay around long enough to protect the youngster until it can take care of itself.
ReplyDeleteVery funny story about trying to help. I would have done that too and those birds must think we should stay out of their business. Love that you are getting to see the cactus blooming. I sure hope we get to do some hiking soon. It seems like a LONG time.
ReplyDeleteGood pun!
