With temps in the high 90's yesterday afternoon, we took the driving tour of dagger flats. There is a forest of these "giant dagger yucca" at the base of the deadhorse mountains. It was a beautiful drive with a nicely done guide for identifying plant life
We stopped to get a picture of the few hoodoos located in the big bend.
On our way back to the campground, we spotted this fella, in the picnic area. " Sorry buddy, there is a burn ban on - no hot dogs on that grill tonight."
We walked on the campground nature trail. There is a really nice view of the Rio Grande from here. I stopped to reflect about how much of my life has been spend in and around the waters that flowed through this valley. I learned to fish, swim and water ski in Elephant Butte lake, which is fed by this river. I spent several college days and evenings drinking beer on her banks and floating her (when there was enough water). And, now I have seen her from a completely new perspective.
Today, we woke up to strong winds and were afraid the day would be shot. We decided to go ahead to the Chisos Basin and hope the mountains would block the wind. They did. We enjoyed the beautiful 5 mile Lost Mine Trail hike and a much cooler day. It is another wonderful CCC trail and we highly recommend it.
After the hike, we had lunch at the lodge and headed back to the campground. The wind has died down and it is lovely afternoon.
We have had a great time here in another of our majestic National Parks. Tomorrow, we move on. See you down the road.....
Looks like we definitely need to add Big Bend to our list of places to visit. I think the thing we are missing most here in Branson is walking/hiking. Apparently not a big activity with the typical Branson visitor...
ReplyDeleteFunny how some things trigger our memory of earlier times. Thanks for taking us along.

The last time I was in Big Bend you could walk down to the river and hail a row boat from Mexico to take you on a wild ride across. Then there was the donkey ride to a dusty little Mexican town with lots of poor people in it. That, of course, was 24 years ago before all the border troubles. Kind of sad. :(
ReplyDeleteYes, it is a different world now- unfortunately.
DeleteHave to get to Big Bend before it turns into Little Bend from all the drought.
ReplyDeleteCatherine is really styling with that fancy hiking outfit!
