As we took Grace out for her morning stroll, we were greeted by tap, tap, tap.... tap tap tap.....
After a few tries, I got a picture
I believe this is an Acorn Woodpecker. The first I have ever seen- Cool. Catherine also got a shot of western scrub Jay. I am sure we have seen them before but never really identified. We started our day with a nice long hike. We hiked the skyline and CCC trails for about 5 miles. We got great views and lots of pictures. However, our internet connection is very slow so we will have to limit the pics. This is the lodge at the state park, looking down from the top of the ridge. After the hike and lunch we headed out to McDonald Observatory. We wanted to do the day tour of the facility. It was a great tour. We first had a lecture on Stars 101. Then they took us up to see two of the telescopes up close. It was very interesting and the tour was well done. We highly recommend it.

We had another hour long thunderstorm last night. This one had more wind and lighting but no hail. Today we plan to visit Ft. Davis historic site and attend the star party at the Observatory tonight. See you down the road....
I like hearing the tap tap tap of woodpeckers a lot better now that we're not living in a s/b. A woodpecker liked to tap on the gutters of one house we lived in. :-(
ReplyDeleteHow cool to be visited by an acorn woodpecker!
ReplyDeleteThat's much better than an evening with movie stars in my opinion. Is the drought about over now?
ReplyDeleteSyl
No, we are still in a deep drought although we have gotten fairly good rain so far this year. The lakes are still dropping because they were so far behind to start the year.
DeleteGreat way to start and end your day!! This is a great life:o))
ReplyDeleteReally nice day and it sounds like you have another on tap for tomorrow. Ain't this RV life grand!!
ReplyDeleteDavid says pizza on the grille "sounds challenging" any tips before we try it? Make the dough put the topings on and slide it onto the grille or???????????????
Make the dough - roll it out thin. Then cook it a bit-until it is stiff. Put toppings on and finish cooking. It will be quite crunchy but Catherine likes it that way.
DeleteI'm another one that want's to know how to do pizza on the grill! Sounds delicious :)
ReplyDeleteI am afraid I am not a real fan of woodpeckers as they have done a lot of damage to several houses I have lived in.
ReplyDeleteCurrently, a couple are working on killing a tree in my daughters front yard:(
Looks like a great time. Love all the pictures. We are learning all about the birds too.
