White Sands , Cloudcroft
We left Las Cruces about 8:30 yesterday headed for the mountains. We made a stop at White Sands National Monument.
White sands is located in the Tularosa
Basin. At 275 square miles, it is the worlds largest gypsum dunefield. It is really beautiful. However the area is suffering the drought, just like the rest of the southwest. The plant life was not as green, which diminished the usual contrast against the white sand. Still, I am glad we stopped. This is another of those places I failed to appreciate properly, when I was growing up here.
We made it to Cloudcroft (Mayhill actually). Our girl climbed the hill ok-(up 4500 ft in 16 miles) She could go the 30mph speed limit, but that is about all. We probably should have unhooked the toad before making the climb, but she did just fine. We are down in a valley, with no cell phone service and spotty internet.. got to get that trucker antenna....
It is hotter than normal here, in the mid 80's. It cooled down to 54 last night. This morning we saw elk and wild turkeys on our walk. We have not made a firm plan for today yet...
See you down the road.....

What, you didn't boogie board down those white sand dunes?
ReplyDeleteWhite Sands is really an amazing NP to see. And those mountain roads can really be something, but you've got a great motorhome that will keep you going.
Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it funny how we can live much of our lives in one place and just take the scenery for granted? It takes moving away to make you appreciate what you had :)
Thanks so much for these shots of White Sands. We haven't been there yet and are looking forward to it.
ReplyDeleteDon't you love days with "no firm plans". Ahh the GOOD life!
Enjoy!!
We love it when you post every day. Our news is that the air conditioning went out in our area today, and it's hot. Woohool So we love hearing about your real adventures.
