We arrived at Carlsbad KOA after a 2.5 hr drive out of the mountains. We were originally going to stay at Brantley Lake State Park, which is much more budget friendly. However it only has 30 amp hookups, and with the temps knocking on the door of 100 degrees. We decided 50 amps and a pool sounded like a good plan for us and especially for Grace who will need to stay in the rig while we visit the Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe Mountains National national parks. This is a very nice park.
long pull though sites, good space between sites, pool, BBQ restaurant in the evenings, breakfast in the mornings, nice laundry room, a mini museum with interesting information about the area and a nice dog park with grass for Grace.
After Naps and Laundry, we headed out for the caverns to catch the bat flight. Sorry -no pictures. They do not allow any electronic devices in the bat flight amphitheater. Apparently, the small noises made by the devices annoy the bats and disrupt their flight patterns. The bats flew, although not in the numbers seen in previous summers-most likely another consequence of the severe drought. We enjoyed the beautiful Sunset on the drive back to the campground. It was a late night -for us.
Now we are up with the sun- headed out for an early morning hike at Guadelupe Mountains National park.
See you down the road...
I visited the caverns at dawn to watch the bats return, and the cave swallows emerge. My son and I had the whole place to ourselves. No crowds that early in the morning. :)
ReplyDeleteI think early morning would be the only time you'd find me out in that heat! I tend to hibernate inside during the heat of the day or head for the closest mall ;)
ReplyDeleteI'd have to choose the 50 amps and pool too.
We stayed at the Carlsbad KOA last year and enjoyed it. We didn't see the bats but we did tour the Caves and they were fantastic.
ReplyDeleteLove your plans. Bats at night. Early morning hike. We need to meet up and do some of those things together.
