After a brief stop at the Visitor's Center, we headed out on our hike up
McKittrick Canyon. It is a nice hike on a well maintained trail. We hiked back about 2.5 miles and arrived at "The Pratt Cabin". This stone cabin was built in 1931 completely out of stone and wood by Wallace Pratt , a petroleum geologist, who came to West Texas in 1921.
They lived in the house as a vacation home and briefly as a retirement home. In 1960, they donated their land totaling over 5000 acres to the National Park Service.
It is a really beautiful place. We plan to come back in the fall. We hiked the 2.5 miles out of the canyon in a pretty stiff breeze but it helped keep us cool. We headed back to the campground for some down time and had BBQ for dinner. Today we will visit the caverns.
See you down the road......
Wow I'd love to have 5000 acres and a cabin to donate in order to protect land I love. good for them.
ReplyDeleteThanks for finding this. Sounds like a place I'd really like and Fall seems like a good time for me to check it out too.
That looks like a beautiful place! I can hardly wait until Fall when it'll be pleasant to hike some of the places on our ever-growing list.
ReplyDeleteYes, Fall is sounding better and better with all this heat across the country.
ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of stone in that house, can you imagine carrying all those rocks to build it?
Not a job I'd want!
Fall will be here before you know it. Bring on the cooler weather!
