A Festive End to our Thanksgiving Trip

Friday, we walked around El Mercado in San Antonio.  We bought a housewarming gift for our niece.  They have lots of beautiful imports from Mexico.  We enjoyed a great Mexican lunch at Mi Tierra.  They already had the place decorated for Christmas.

Friday afternoon, we walked over to the Alamo.  They had a Texas sized tree on display.

Apparently, everyone else in San Antonio thought this was a good idea as well.  The line to get in the main building was very long.  We have been in many times.  So, we skipped it for a walk through the grounds and the gift shop and a trip to one of my favorite San Antonio locations:
The Menger bar is where Teddy Roosevelt recruited the rough riders in 1898 .  It is a beautiful old bar and a nice place to enjoy a cold one.
Friday night, we gathered in Catherine's parents room for the main event:  The lighting of the Riverwalk and the river parade:

At 7:00 the trees along the river all lit up:
It really is beautiful they have gone back to hanging the lights down from the trees.  When they switched to LED lights in 2011, they started wrapping trees.  Some people didn't like it, and apparently neither did the squirrels. The squirrels chewed up so many lights that they returned to hanging them down through the trees.
Then, the parade gets started:
Some floats have bands:

 One float had a snowman.
They all had lots of lights.

It was a good parade.  It ended with Santa -of course  but I took Grace for a walk before it ended in order to keep her out of the post parade crowd. So, I missed Santa.

Saturday afternoon, we attended "The Nutcracker" at the Majestic Theater in San Antonio.  Ballet is not really my cup of tea, but the kids were very cute and I made it back to the hotel in time for the second half of Alabama & Auburn- Wow.

We celebrated Catherine's parents 54th anniversary with a nice dinner at the Las Canarias restaurant.

We hit the road early Sunday morning for a couple of PDD travel days- 641 miles Sunday and 538 miles Monday.
We arrived home to find our condo complex has been transformed for the holidays.

We have very nice decorations and we did not have to put them up :).  We will add a few to our Condo this week.

We had a great trip but we are tired and glad to be back home to warm, sunny, Florida.

After a bath, it is time for a nap.
We have a short trip to Disney planned in two weeks but mostly December will be about hanging out enjoying condo life.

  1. You are definitely contenders for the PDD Driving Club with those miles, but you have to do it in a motorhome... ;c)

You may have missed Santa, but I hope he doesn't miss you at Christmas!

  2. What a nice bird's eye view you had for the parade.

  3. Wow what a view you had of the parade. That's my idea of how to watch a parade. Great view no crowds, comfy seats.. A few days with Disney during the season sounds like fun too.

  4. You should really be in the Christmas Spirit after all the celebration in San Antonio!! However, heading to Disney World anytime between Thanksgiving and Christmas will sure be the icing on the cake:o)) Disney really knows how to decorate for the season and the crowds really aren't bad that time of year!!! Have FUN:o)

  5. Wow! I'm with Sherry on your view for the parade -- fantastic! That was a nice surprise to come home and see your home all lit up for the holidays, and you didn't have to lift a finger. But I'm exhausted just thinking of those PDD driving days. Grace definitely had the right idea to catch up on her beauty sleep. :-)

  6. Great parade and an even greater place to watch it from.

You sure put in some major driving days - PDD style for sure.
