Yesterday, we met our friends Marion and Ethel in Big Spring for lunch. We were celebrating Marion's birthday. We were also checking out the renovation of the historic Hotel Settles in Big Spring. The hotel was originally built in 1930. It had fallen in to a state of disrepair for many years and has recently been renovated by a wealthy native of Big Spring. Texas Monthly has a good article about the renovation "Up with the Old Hotel".
It is a little hard to see in the picture but a key feature advertised in 1930 was "Air Conditioned".
The lobby is just fabulous with a beautiful grand staircase. It really shows the care that was taken in the restoration to bring the hotel back to it's former glory.
Here is our group enjoying a lot of conversation with our lunch. We were early, so we started lunch with the place to ourselves. It filled up during the lunch hour and all the food looked good. We all enjoyed our meals.
There used to be a pharmacy in one corner of the building. It has now been turned into a very nice bar. They also have a nice lounge with a fireplace and big screen TV's - a very cozy place to watch a football game.
The ballroom is really beautiful. I predict lots of West Texas brides and grooms will celebrate here in the next few years.
We finished the day with a driving tour of Big Spring, which included a trip to "the big spring". I had never been there before so I had to stick my toe in. It was a hot day so the water was warm- not cool and refreshing.
It was a very nice day with friends and really nice to see a beautiful old building brought back to life.

What a beautiful old hotel, sure nice to see it all renovated and back in business. I imagine A/C in Texas back in the 30's would be as big a draw as free WiFi today.
ReplyDeleteTurning a pharmacy into a bar. Just another way to medicate... :cD
ReplyDeleteThat hotel is gorgeous! Glad someone had the money to bring it back. I hope they are successful. Glad you went there so I could see it. Somehow I hadn't thought about springs in Texas. I know it has beautiful green country but I always think of it as hot and dry. That's what you get when you don't go see for yourself and rely on those old cowboy movies!
ReplyDeleteTexas has many springs. The best swimming hole in Texas is Barton Springs right in the middle of Austin.
DeleteSomehow a bar in a hotel makes more sense than a pharmacy :) Looks like they've done a fabulous restoration!
ReplyDeleteThe lobby is magnificent. I imagine the locals are thrilled it's been restored and back in business.
