| Before the battle |
The presentation started with information about the uniforms, weapons and equipment used by both Japanese and American troops.
There was a demonstration of most of the weapons.
Many of the participants were quite young and they really did a good job speaking and detailing all the information about the weapons and equipment.
After the weapons demonstrations, they set the scene for the battle of Tarawa. The real battle lasted 4 days and was one of the bloodiest of the war - costing the lives of nearly 6000 American and Japanese soldiers. Here is a video with the beginning and end of the battle reenactment.
The battle ended with the stars and strips being raised over the battle field.
Even though our butts were frozen by the time we got off those metal bleachers, we both thought it was worth it. The presentations were very well done. Afterwards, we had a nice lunch in Fredericksburg and headed back home.
The temps are supposed to climb back in to the 70's today-much better.
Interesting day from the looks of it. Glad you both survived the battle unscathed.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering about wood fired pizza in my blog a few days ago. In particular, how does a pizza know if its been baked in a regular oven or wood fired? What's the difference?
The oven is hotter so the pizza cooks very fast and has a much crispier crust.
DeleteThank you for sharing the video. Now I feel like we saw the part of the museum we missed in our two days there. Thanks for posting the videos.

That's the first time I've heard of a battle re-enactment that didn't concern the Civil War.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fun day all around!
ReplyDeleteCan't go wrong with almost any menu if it has wine attached to it! I get spoiled here in the Pac NW with all the wineries, but I was pleasantly surprised with the ones I visited in the Texas Hill Country - enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI think I have the same question as Rick. What makes a wood fired pizza different? :) If it has a crust, sauce and cheese, I'm usually good :)
ReplyDeleteQuite a variety of activites you two manage to find. Makes for interesting blogging.
ReplyDeleteWonder where you can get some of those split toe shoes the Japanese soldier was wearing?

DeletePizza, wine, and a battlefield reenactment! We just need to follow you around. That seemed like a fun day.
