DYI - Hot Water Heater

If you have followed this blog for very long, you know that I like to fix things myself when possible.  Our temp & pressure valve on the hot water heater has been dripping and I decided to replace it.  I went over to Iron Horse RV and purchased one. I knew that if it turned out to be too difficult to get a wrench on it, I could just have them install in Wednesday as we are going back in to have a new sensor installed on the jacks.

The instigator

I drained the water heater.  I had no trouble installing the new valve.  Great --- all is well -- not --- I went to put the drain plug back and it would not seal-drip, drip drip - more teflon tape - drip drip drip.

The culprit
After inspection, I determined that it was pure luck (and a lot of pipe dough) that had been keeping it sealed all this time.  After a couple of trips to Lowe's, and a couple of different fittings I finally got a brass fitting with a hose washer around it to stop the drip.
The Fixer

A simple job turned out to be --  simply a pain.  The worst part was that every time I tried a fix that did not work, I had to take the plug out and get sprayed with water again. So, I spent a good part of yesterday wet and frustrated.  Catherine stayed away from me:) However, it did not dampen my enthusiasm for DYI.  I went to sleep pleased with my solution and happy that I was able to fix it myself.  Today - looks to be a rainy one.  We might drive out to Ancira RV to look around.  All the blog talk of the Tampa RV show and new rigs has given us the bug to look around.  See you down the road.....

  3. Color me impressed as well!! Not sure I could take on that job but some that I do, there's a great satisfaction in not having to take the thing in to have someone else do it and then pay for it. Even if it takes me twice as long. It SHOULD cost me half as much. I love a bargain that's for sure!
