After touring the Elvis exhibit, we did the presidential library. We both thought it was extremely well done. Parts of it are done chronologically from campaign through the presidency, and other parts are centered on specific themes such as economic policy or science and technology. The third floor is devoted to the early lives of both President Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton, and their life in the white house, with focus on holidays and state dinners. Factoid.. Over 1000 volunteers give their time to help decorate the White House for Christmas every year and some have been doing it for years. We had lunch downstairs in the restaurant, "forty two." It was very good.
Next to the library is the old Choctaw Railroad building. It now houses the Clinton School of Public Service, which is part of the University of Arkansas. They offer a Masters degree in public service. It is a beautiful old building.
After we left the library, we drove through downtown Little Rock. On the left, is the old Arkansas State house. I have not been here since 1987 and was very impressed with the transformation of the downtown area. It has really been cleaned up and refurbished. There are lots of shops and restaurants. They are completing an "urban trail" which will go through downtown and along the riverfront. It was all very clean and nice. We were sorry we did not have more time to spend there but we needed to get home to Grace.
If we are ever traveling back through, I think we will plan on spending a couple of days in Little Rock. See you down the road....
That MG WAS the coolest car ever! :)
ReplyDeleteSounds like the Clinton Library is another must do. We look forward to going back to Little Rock. That's where we bought Lucy but didn't have a chance to do any tourist stuff that time around.
Well, you had great taste in cars even at age 5!
ReplyDeleteAnother great place to visit in Little Rock is the Central High School National Historic Site. The High School still functions as as high school, with the headquarters of the historic site and the story of the forced integration of the school across the street. Looking at the pure hatred on the faces of the white adults threatening the black kids... I wonder what those adults would think now, looking at their photos. What a hard, hard, time.
Also, the headquarters of Heifer International is right next door to the Clinton Library. Great organization and a very interesting building.
We didn't have nearly enough time in Little Rock, and keep planning to go back... that trip has been thwarted by tornado threats for the past couple of years!
Well sometime in what seems now like the farrrrrrrr distant future I have added Little Rock to our list. I'd never have thought of it as a great place to go but you have made me change my mind.
ReplyDeleteLOVE that the Clinton Library had an Elvis exhibit. Why am I not surprised?? Made me laugh but for those of us who are serious Elvis fans you must do Graceland again and again. There is an entire building of cars. Go for it! Drag Catherine anyway.......sorry Catherine.
OR better yet, come get me and bring a wheelchair! I'd gladly go again and I think the whole place is wheelchair friendly.
So you loved your brother's MG at age five and here, twenty years later, you still love MGs. You have good taste in sports cars. :c)
