Palo Duro Canyon

The lighthouse
Saturday, we did the six mile hike to the lighthouse.  We got started early - about 8:00 when it was nice and cool.  It was a great hike.  The trail is also heavily used by mountain bikers and they were out in force.  We enjoyed watching them ride but were happy to be on our feet.  We watched some college football and grilled some chicken for dinner.  It was a great day.
Amphitheater
Sunday, we did not get started quite as early.  We had our pancake breakfast and set out to hike the CCC trail. The trail starts behind the amphitheater where the musical "TEXAS" is performed during the summer.  The theater is really cool.  As you can see, the backdrop is the canyon wall.  We really want to see the show someday, but it only goes from June - August and we did not make it this year.

As we made our way around to the CCC trail head, we spotted this roadrunner.  We also saw some deer and wild turkeys but no snakes, during our stay:).  The CCC trail is a three mile round trip.  It was a nice hike but it was a much warmer day so we were happy that it was a shorter trail.  When we got back, we made some nachos and watched football.  My teams lost this week but other than that, another great day.
We enjoyed our stay at Palo Duro Canyon.  We headed out his morning towards Albuquerque.  We are in no hurry, so we decided to stop in Santa Rosa for the night.  We need to clean the rig and give Grace a bath.  That will make it a short 100 miles to Albuquerque tomorrow.  After we stopped, we were really glad we did.  The wind has really kicked up and it is tiring to drive this big rig in the high winds.
See you down the road....

  1. I think we hate wind more than rain when driving. That is unless it's pouring.

Glad you stopped. Take a break and relax :)

  2. New Mexico surely has more than their share of high winds! Best to hunker down. :)

  3. Great shots of the canyon. Interesting how that formation really resembles a lighthouse.

  4. Nice picture of the Road Runner. Did you see Wiley Coyote around anywhere? ;c)
