Brasstown Bald

Yesterday, we started to take a drive up to Brasstown Bald.  However, the clouds rolled in just as we started up the hill.  So, we changed plans and just took a mountain drive instead.  About the only excitement on the drive was moving a box turtle out of the road and spotting a momma turkey and her brood.
Wednesday, we got up early and charged up the mountain.   We parked and walked up the trail to the visitors center.  It was a lovely walk and still just 60 degrees when we arrived at the top.   Brasstown Bald is the highest point in Georgia.  The view was pretty good but there were still lots of clouds settled down over the nearby mountains.
From up top you can see four states-Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and South Carolina.

After our walk up and back down the peak, we drove up the road to Helen.  Helen is a Bavarian themed town.  We arrived about 11:30 and found a place to get some lunch.  I got a beer and a brat on a pretzel bun and Catherine got some veggie spaetzle dish that she really liked.
I am not sure if this town has a German theme because there are lots of Germans in the area or if someone just thought it would bring in the tourists.  I can tell you it does bring in the tourists. By 1:00 pm, the streets were crowded and we were headed back home.
Today, we are doing some chores around the coach and doing Laundry.  This weekend we are going to the Farmer's market and the Butternut Creek Festival.
Next week, we will work on getting some more hiking done.

  1. Those clouds roll in and sit on the mountains up here too. They are here and then they are gone. You just never know. I know you must be loving the temperatures.

  2. I think German theme in Helen was to bring in tourists.

We've been on Brasstown when it was so clear you could see Atlanta, but we like it on cloudy days too. We even went for sunset one night.

I'm not sure if you hiked the Bear Hair Trail at Vogel, or the waterfall trail, but both are nice.

You aren't too far from the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Cherohala Skyway. Both are spectacular drives and the Cherohala has some beautiful waterfalls. It will take you through NC and TN.

Ruby Falls and Rock City are an easy day trip and pretty cool. Both are in Chattanooga.
