We had two good hikes yesterday. The first was to DeSoto Falls. It was about 2.5 miles round trip.It was the first time we had hiked in a while and we certainly felt all those months in flat Florida at first. But, we got in the groove and managed to make it in pretty good time.
DeSoto falls is named for spanish artifacts found near the site that are presumed to belong to an exploration party of Hernando DeSoto.
There is an upper and lower falls. It is actually two different falls. We had a plesant hike to both falls.
After the falls, we stopped at Mountain Crossings at Neel Gap.
We looked around but did not make a purchase. We did see a couple of through hikers. One girl had found a puppy on the AT and now has a new hiking companion. I am not sure how that is going to work but it sure was a cute puppy.
We got hiking fever after the visit to the store and decided to take the Byron Reese Memorial Trail to the AT. That was a really good hike only 1.4 miles( round trip) but it had some challenging spots.
The long road to Maine. You have to really admire those who have made that journey.
We got off the trail just in time as a rain/hail storm hit. No damage from the hail but Grace was sure glad to see us when we got home.
Glad the storm wasn't as bad as predicted. While you're up there, you might enjoy reading the book called Into the Woods. It's about two guys who hiked the AT, starting just south of you in GA. It's been made into a movie and coming out soon, staring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte. It was a fantastic book and reading about the through hikers was very interesting. Post often, we are living vicariously through you both!

DeleteMaybe you mean "A Walk in the Woods". I loved that book about the AT. Should be a fabulous movie. "Into the Woods" was a great play and now a movie with Meryl Streep
DeleteThe AT always plucks at my heart strings.
ReplyDeleteWay to go...2 good hikes in a day!! When you have get your flatlanders leg broke in, take a look at Blood Mountain. It's a challenge, but so worth it. Love Neels Gap and the way the AT pass right though the complex:o))
ReplyDeleteNice that you got north and are enjoying the mountains of Georgia. Funny, I never really think of Georgia when I think of mountains, but reading Karen and Al's stories I realize they really ARE mountains. Loved the hike.
ReplyDeleteI'm a little stiff, too. Spent the day spackling and painting walls at my son's house. Hope I'm not too stiff tomorrow when I pick up my motorcycle from the repair shop where it was in for routine maintenance. I have to swing my leg over it to ride, hope the joints work... ;c)
