Out and About

Yesterday, we had a couple new visitors.  A pair of American Oystercatchers were roaming around the complex.  I love the big eye and that bright orange bill.

Maybe they inspired me or it was all the fellow bloggers who have been to Myakka lately. We decided to take a drive down there, while our ceiling was being sprayed. Right into the park we got a great view of some big gators.

We got a good look at this wood stork fishing by the dam.  There were also lots of buzzards and a few more gators in residence.

As we made our way over to the bird walk,  We saw a big flock of sandhill cranes.  There were about 16 of them. I don't recall ever seeing that many together before.
After a nice visit to Myakka, we decided to go into Sarasota and get a piece of pie at Yoder's restaurant.  We had heard about it but had never been there.  We got a piece of blackberry pie to go and had it for dessert.  It was very good.  Next time we will have to try a meal there.

It was good to spend the day out enjoying nature.  Today we are enjoying being in our house without workmen to keep us company.

  1. I'll bet you're enjoying your quiet this weekend.
Myakka looks like it needs to be on our list to check out.

  3. If you want to see large numbers of Sandhill cranes, go to Paynes Prairie State park in the next few weeks. Thousands of them winter there. We went in early February (if I remember correctly) and they estimated there were 6000 there. It was amazing....and dirty.

  4. Just checked my blog. We were there on Jan 20 of 2009. Some of the cranes had already left, so we almost missed them. It's an incredible sight, if you get a chance to see them.

  5. If you want to see lots of cranes, head on out to Bosque del Apache NWR in New Mexico any time during the winter. :)
