After the "Dawn Patrol" takes off, the other balloons start to inflate. The first up in the air is the flag bearer. A local choir performed the national anthem and the mass ascension began. On the first day, they were trying to set a record for the most balloons launched in one hour. One of the unique things about this event, is that you can get right on the field with the balloons.
This one came right over our heads as it lifted off.
You could feel the heat from the burners and it was welcome on this chilly morning. When they started going up, they went fast.
The first special shape to appear was the tourist penguin.
Then a crowd favorite launched.
The weather was perfect the balloons went up about 500 feet flying south and then caught a breeze that sent them right back over the field. It was really fantastic. We heard later that they did break the record by launching 345 balloons in one hour.
We took a bunch of pictures. I will try to pick out the best ones for the next few posts. See you down the road....
This is SO cool. You have almost talked me into going myself. It may take a few more pictures though.............
ReplyDeleteCan you go up in one? Suppose if you can it's mega BUCKS.
I'm with Sherry....I don't like crowds. But this is so cool, we might have to put it on our TODOS list anyway;o))
ReplyDeleteGreat Photos...we are really enjoying them!!
We're not much for crowds, but we just may have to bite the bullet sometime for this. It must have been a spectacular sight!
ReplyDeleteWow! Are you going to go up in one? If so how much does it cost?
ReplyDeleteWe, too, don't like crowds and I'm not into getting up early anymore either, but this is just too cool not to do! It's definitely on the list.
