Our destination was the Library of Congress
What a beautiful building. The inside is just fabulous with stained glass and lots of mosaic and marble. They have a guided tour and an online tour. We downloaded the app and did our own self-guided tour. As we were enjoying our tour, I looked up and saw the symbol that adorned my business card for many years.
I worked for Elsevier publishing and a version of this logo is still used on the business cards today. That was kind of fun.
There were several nice exhibits at the Library including a very well done Civil Rights exhibit.
We left the hill and walked down to the new memorial for American Vetrans Disabled for Life. It was very nicely done. It will be beautiful when the trees grow up and it is a nice canopied walk.
We grabbed a Gyro from a food truck -very good! And then walked over to the botanical gardens. It was such a nice day we wanted to stay outside. It was very nice and they had a terrific collection of Orchids.
I loved this bird of paradise. It looks just perfect.
Our last stop was the American History Museum. Much of it was closed, due to a major rennovation. There was still a lot to see. They also had a nice civil rights exhibit including this Greensboro lunch counter.
An Apple IIE computer, provided a blast from the past.
Catherine poses next to Archie's chair. "Hey Edith get me a beer" :).
It was another great day in D.C. We will have to get back after 2017 when the American History Museum will be completely refurbished.
We arrived back home on Sunday and had a pretty normal week for us. Catherine volunteered at the library and I worked a couple of days on a Habitat home. We are doing an all woman build. We are in the framing stage and it is looking pretty darn good.
I have been asked to serve on the condo board of directors and I have been busy getting into those duties.
The weather has been fantastic this week. This is why we live in Florida :) We are going to get out and enjoy the neighborhood this weekend.
I hadn't heard of that new memorial. Guess I'll have to try to get back to DC some time.
ReplyDeleteYour post about DC really made me want to get back there. We always enjoy visiting and how easy it is to walk wherever you want to go!! There is just so much to see and do :o)
ReplyDeleteSure are a lot of great things to see in Washington. I'll just have to get there one day. The Supreme Court is a beautiful looking building - it's too bad so many bozo judges get to work there.
ReplyDeleteYou picked the best time of the year to see DC, nice that you had a great time. I hadn't heard of the new memorial, either. I haven't been there since 2008 when I transferred to Yorktown, VA so I'm sure they've snuck a few new things in.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your time on the Condo Board. You'll bring some good commons sense to it, I'm sure! :c)
I just loved the Library of Congress when we were there in May. Your beautiful pictures of the flowers make me sorry I didn't see the botanical gardens. Congrats on your selection to the board. Hope it turns out to be a something you enjoy.
ReplyDeleteYou picked the perfect time of the year to see DC. I also like Spring when all the cherry trees are blooming.
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoy the condo board and that it doesn't become too much like w-o-r-k :)
