Doing DC- Thursday

We started out early in the morning for the National Gallery of Art.  There is an app that can be downloaded on your phone which will give you an audio tour.  It is quite large.  I recommend downloading while connected to Wifi. We tried it over cellular and it was taking forever. There are some areas in the museum where you get a good wifi signal.
The first exhibit we saw was the Andrew Wyeth
It was really excellent.  I had never seen so many examples of his work.  Turns out I like it a lot more now that I have seen more of it.  They also had a special exhibit featuring Titian's Danae on loan from a museum in Naples.  This was one of the paintings stolen by the Nazi's and rescued by the team known as "The Monuments Men".

There was also a nice Degas exhibit which featured the original wax statue "Little Dancer" done in 1881. It is a really special piece.  That was all in addition to the fantastic permanent collection!  We spent 5 hours there and only got through the west building.  The east building is under renovation. We did visit the lobby to see some of the modern sculpture.

After doing the west building, We strolled through the sculpture garden.  We were happy to see an installation from Robert Indiana, whose work we blogged about last May.
I did not get the name of the artist but Catherine and I both liked this piece -a blast from the past.
After the sculpture garden, we made our way over to the National Archives.  We basically thought we would see the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.  We saw those and a lot more.  The museum has many new exhibits and we thought they were really well done.  We could have spent more time in there but we were exhausted.
We had an early dinner and turned in early ready to go at it again on Friday.  I will detail those adventures in my next post.

  4. SO that's where my eraser went! I always get lost in the museum, so much to see and I lose track of time. ;c)

  5. Those exhibits in the National Gallery sound and look wonderful. I love Wyeth. Wish I could get up there before that is gone. Looking forward to your Friday.

  6. I'm glad to hear that Nicholas Cage (National Treasure) returned the US Constitution to its viewing place in time for your visit.

Definitely a couple of top-notch attractions in DC.

  7. Great eraser! :)
I think any time spent there is too short. There is just too much to see!
