Thursday, we decided to head to the beach. We wanted to check on the skimmer nesting grounds. We stopped off at a new pastry cafe and got some breakfast.
After breakfast, we walked down the beach. We noticed most of the skimmers were down by the water. We saw this youngster practicing on foot instead of on the wing.
We then noticed lots of youngsters. There were signs asking people to give them space while they teach their young to be adults.
There were lots and lots of babies of all sizes. It was great to see. There were also some adults who appeared to be still sitting on eggs. We took a few pictures but then moved on. We did not want to disturb them any further.
Later in the day, Grace made her visit to the vet for shots and a check up. She got a clean bill of health except for a dry eye. She has to use some special eye drops but otherwise she is fine.
Friday, I did another habitat day. It is too hot to do anything fun- might as well work. I got to practice my carpentry skills. I built two of these doorway arches.
We had a pretty low key weekend. We had planned to go finish cleaning the coach and fill it with diesel but that got pushed to next weekend. We enjoyed the full moon in the mornings.
It was really pretty- glimmering off the water.
No big plans for this week-water aerobics and volunteering :)
It's nice to see the skimmers are successful in their nesting. They are one of my favorite kinds of seabirds.
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job on the arch. Did you learn from someone there?
Hop in that motorhome and come on up here to the mountains. It's warm, but not hot and the nights are nice and cool.
I've never seen young skimmers before. Very interesting.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful moon!
ReplyDeleteThe young skimmers are a new one for me also!! Them and the moon are really cool:o)) Oh, the Arch is cool also;o))
ReplyDeleteWhat fun to have nesting skimmers in your neighborhood and a pastry place on the way to see them. That's a beautiful arch you built. You really are talented with those tools
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see that there are others who know how important a good breakfast is before starting the day - a pastry cafe is one of my favourite "breakfast of champions".
ReplyDeleteNice job on the arches. And, the pics of the supermoon.
Great pictures of those young skimmers, what a thrill it must have been to see them live and in person!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful craftsmanship on those arches! You are truly amazingly talented!
