Old Favorite Things

We found time this week (between picking up kids from school, visiting sister in hospital and having dinner with Catherine's parents) to visit a couple of the old favorites in this area.  Our favorite Tex-Mex place is "Chuy's". They have had locations in Austin, San Antonio, and Houston for years.  Now they are going national (I hope they don't screw it up).  It is a fun place.  Every restaurant has a tribute to Elvis and they also make their own tortilla's ---mmmmmmm......

In addition to good Tex- Mex, they also serve a mean New Mexico style Green Chili Sauce. Being from N.M.,  I am not a huge fan of the traditional Tex Mex sauces, which is why Chuy's is always my first choice. They have a great happy hour - good margaritas and lots of free snacks to soak them up.
For a good steak, I like Josephine Street Cafe.  This is not one of those fancy $30 steaks, just a plain old pan fried, good steak.  The neon signs in the window read "steaks" and "whisky." What is more Texan than that?  Also, you have to love a place that has a tree growing up through the floor.  It is hot in Texas, you can't waste good shade :).

They have a great bar but you will want to take it easy on the drinks.  The floor is so warped you need all your wits about you, in order to negotiate your way out.   I had a rib-eye and onion rings which paired nicely with a Shiner-BockCatherine went with chicken fried chicken (this only makes sense if you are from Texas).
Both were as good as they look.
This weekend, we plan on visiting some of the Lower Colorado River Authority parks in the Austin area.  We are investigating camp hosts opportunities with them.
Happy Veterans Day and thanks to those of you who served.
See you down the road......

  1. I wish we had gone out to dinner with you! It sure looks much better than what we got :)
I LOVE good Tex-Mex and haven't really had any since we left Houston in 1992! I am so looking forward to our TX winter :) Maybe we can even find a Chuy's!

  2. Wow, how do you find these great eateries? It's nice to see there are alternatives to McDonald's... ;c)

  3. Yum! I think you need to start warning people -"Food blog - make sure you read when not hungry"! Otherwise, we will have to take Syl's idda and start licking the computer screens! My restaurant recommendations log is getting longer than my campground one! haha

  4. If Chuy's has a tribute to Elvis, then I'm gonna have to check it out!
