HONU

Honu is the Hawaiian name for the endangered green sea turtle.  The resort we stayed at raises the turtles and releases a group every July 4 called "Turtle Independence Day." The little guy on the rocks is a hatchling.  

They live in an indoor pond.     
The juveniles (in the boxes) live in an outdoor pond with a little more room.  Once a week they take them out and let the kids scrub their shells while they teach them about the turtles. 

These guys will probably get to participate in the next independence day celebration. 

Every day we would see a few adults that had pulled themselves up on the beach for some basking time.

Amazing creatures....
