Another Bird Rescue

We have been doing some of our routine things back in Florida.  I have worked at habitat and Catherine is working at the library.  We are sure missing that cool weather in North Georgia.

We had a pretty exciting Saturday though.  We were on our way to a friends house, when we got a message that a heron was trapped in the mangroves. He had fishing line wrapped around his legs and it was tangled in the mangroves.

We got our "stuff" and headed over.  I threw a towel over him and got him out of the mangroves. Then we set about taking the line off and removing a hook from his leg.  Sadly, the left foot had already been severed.  The leg actually looked like it was healing well where the foot was severed.

I am not sure if this one will make it with only one foot. It was able to fly and it walked Ok, even with the bad leg.

Hopefully, it will be able to feed.  At least now it has a chance.

We are headed to Texas tomorrow to see family and friends.  We will be gone about a week.

  1. Thanks for helping the poor heron. I hate fishermen who leave line all over the place with no thought of the consequences. There are a lot of wildlife rescue places that probably would have taken the heron. There are sanctuaries for birds that are unable to live in the wild. I've seen birds with only one foot and they appeared to do ok. I hope this guy will as well. Enjoy your visit to Texas. I hope your friend is still doing well.

  2. How wonderful of you to help the heron. I hope he will be OK. I am just amazed at how trashy fishermen are. Safe trip to Texas. Hope it's cooler there although probably not.

  3. You're my heroes! Many people would have just let the poor bird die. Hope it makes it, you've given it the best chance.

I get so angry at the careless fishermen that just leave tangled lines anywhere. You'd think they of all people would be more careful. :c(
