Still Alive- Still Building

We are still alive- busy doing condo activities, Habitat, and hanging out with friends.  We have not had much to blog about.  This is a new habitat project. A historic home that was purchased, moved and donated.  It is not every day we rebuild a 130 year old home. It has taken over a year to get to this point.  Volunteers just started recently and I was anxious to get in on the action.

Last week was my first time working on this house.  We framed out this bathroom.  It is quite an experience nailing in to 130 year old wood and removing square head nails.

This is one of the bed rooms.  Look at the beautiful woodwork around the doors and the 8" baseboard- really beautiful.  It will all be taken down to natural wood and refinished.
A group of window professionals held a clinic where folks paid $300 to come learn how to rebuild these old windows.  Habitat got new windows-  lots of people learned how to restring and rebuild these windows.

Today, we spent the day in the attic- shoring up the roof.  You can see where we have put in new wood along side the old.
We are putting in new 2x12 beams around the floor and then putting in new roof braces all the way around.  This will keep the roof weight evenly dispersed on all the load bearing walls.  An attempt to build an attic storage space at one time, had compromised the structure.

This is going to be a long project  but it is really something special.
Tomorrow, I will work on another home, installing kitchen cabinets.  In other news, I bailed off the condo board- too much politics and too much like a job.  These days I only want to do work for which I have a passion.
We finished our library project at the condo and it turned out great.  We are glad we could help manage something that all the residents can enjoy.
That is about it.  We are starting to think about summer travels and working on putting together our plans.  We will definitely have hitch itch long before it is time to leave in mid-June.

  1. I don't have your carpentry skills, but I think I'd like working on an old house like that.

  6. Really cool house. It would be fun working on it. Just wondering if the water in the bathtub is 100 years old too? ;)
